Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan.,
(WASHINGTON, DC) - U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today sent a letter,
signed by U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, and Representatives Jerry Moran, Todd Tiahrt, Nancy Boyda and Dennis Moore, to the President urging him to expedite consideration of requests for aid from the state following the June 11 storms.
Senators Roberts and Brownback, and Rep. Boyda are arriving from Washington tonight to tour the region to ensure the emergency response is meeting the needs of local residents.
The following is the text of the letter sent today, June 12, 2008:
Dear President Bush:
Once again, we write you at a time of mourning in our state. Last
night, tornadoes ripped through northeast Kansas, resulting in great amounts of destruction, including damage to 85 percent of homes in Chapman, Kansas and causing over $20 million in damage to Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.
Thankfully, the National Guard and FEMA swiftly deployed, and Kansans are showing incredible care for their neighbors as research and recovery efforts are underway. Unfortunately, there have been at least two casualties, several critically injured individuals, and many more walking wounded. We have no doubt that as efforts continue, everyone involved will provide the aid and care that has become the hallmark of all recovery efforts in Kansas.
Last year, Kansas suffered through storms that involved federal
disaster declarations for almost every one of our 105 counties. This year, we have been more fortunate. However, it does not make the damage for those in towns like Chapman and Manhattan any less devastating. As each hour passes, the people whose livelihoods were destroyed last night are faced with ever more dire circumstances
We ask that you carefully consider any and all requests from our
state for a federal disaster declaration, as the large amount of damage
caused by this storm is overwhelming to state and local officials. As the
Kansas National Guard, FEMA, and first responders in the area continue to work to save people and property, we request you provide all available federal resources in this effort. We thank you in advance for your consideration.
Sen. Pat Roberts
Sen. Sam Brownback
Rep. Dennis Moore
Rep. Nancy Boyda
Rep. Todd Tiahrt
Rep. Jerry Moran
