China is likely to be a political and economic competitor by the middle of the century but shouldn't be treated as an "enemy of the United States." CIA Director Michael Hayden warns that China will likely be viewed as an adversary if Beijing uses its global influence to support its own interests at the cost of peace and stability. Hayden's comments were delivered in Wednesday afternoon's Landon Lecture at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Hayden also predicts more tension between the United States and Europe because of different views about terrorism. He calls on Americans to learn the languages and cultures needed to meet the new challenges, in the same way the United States developed its Soviet expertise during the Cold War.
