Kelly, Sebelius Tout Newborn Screening
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ During his playing days, football was Jim Kelly's passion. Now, his passion is childhood diseases.
Since his son, Hunter, was diagnosed with a rare disease of the nervous system, Kelly has been on mission to increase awareness and prevention of those diseases.
Kelly, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Sen. Vicki Schmidt on Tuesday touted the state's expansion this summer of the number of diseases for which newborns will be screened from four to 29. Funding by the 2007 Legislature made the expansion possible, at a cost of $56 per child.
Kelly said his son could have been treated for the disease had it been detected at birth. His son died in 2005.
Kelly played for the Buffalo Bills from 1986 to 1996.
