FROM TPD -- Recently, the city of Topeka has seen an increase in home break-ins and car thefts due to garage doors being left open or partially raised. The suspects are able to get inside of the garage, and from there can steal a car that has keys inside of it, or enter the home through the door leading inside from the garage, which is often left unlocked.
These home burglaries have taken place both when residents have been home, and when the home has been empty. Police would like to remind citizens to completely close their garage doors, to remove keys from inside of the vehicle even when parked in a garage, and to take garage door openers out of vehicles that are parked in the driveway, in order to decrease the number of these thefts/burglaries we are seeing.
