Fort Riley soldier Private First Class John Hayden allegedly led police on a high speed chase after a bank robbery. He is now in critical condition tonight -- police say from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It all began around 1:30 Friday when police were called out to the UMB bank at 29th and Wanamaker Drive. The suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
Police say the tellers at the bank took down excellent descriptions, which really helped police, especially when they noticed a vehicle matching the suspect description, and pursued -- at speeds topping 100 miles per hour.
Police put stop sticks out. The suspect saw them and veered off into the opposite lanes on 1-70...causing him to wreck near the Snokomo Road exit...east of Paxico.
He fired shots at officers and fled on foot. Police helicopters and a SWAT team cornered the man in an abandoned vehicle. He was originally said to have been taken into custody.
Police told 13 News Friday night Hayden had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound -- and is in critical condition.
