Kansas Legislature Returns

The Kansas Legislature gaveled its 2008 session to order with House Speaker Melvin Neufeld doing the honors at 2:00 Monday afternoon. Lawmakers, predicting health care, immigration and energy will be the top three issues in '08.. are bracing to hear what Governor Kathleen Sebelius will say in her State of the State Address at 7:00 tonight. (The speech airs each year on Kansas Public Television.)

House members returned to find their chamber newly re-decorated in the Capitol renovation. The project, which began in 2001, won't be finished until 2011. Architect Barry Greis says they want the chamber to look more like it did when the Statehouse's West Wing was finished in the early 1880s. It features chandeliers and lighting fixtures, plus new carpeting.

We'll all get a closer look at the governor's budget proposal, topping 12-billion dollars.. when Budget Director Duane Goossen talks with reporters Tuesday morning at 10:00 in the Landon State Office Building.
