TOPEKA ZOO -- The Topeka Zoo is partying to celebrate the first birthday of its most famous star, Hope the Giraffe! The date is Sunday, July 10 from 10:00 to 3:00, you're all invited.. and the party will include numerous activities throughout the day, all for a very special Zoo resident, Hope.
Festivities include a number of activities for young and the young at heart. Children will enjoy bouncing in a inflatable carousel or cooling off on the 20 X 40 foot waterslide.
In addition, games including pin the tail on the giraffe, giraffe hopscotch, giraffe ring toss, and tattoos will be available and children will also have an opportunity to make their own giraffe party hat. To learn more about giraffes, guests will be challenged to a giraffe fact scavenger hunt which can be turned in at the Leopard Spot Gift Shop for an opportunity to win a Hope Gift Basket.
No birthday would be complete without birthday treats. The Zoo will plan to present a birthday cake to Hope at 1:00 following a few brief comments from special guests and of course the singing of Happy Birthday to Hope. Zoo visitors will enjoy birthday treats as well. Following the birthday ceremony, zoo guests can participate in giraffe feeding at 1:30. For a donation of $1, visitors can feed romaine lettuce to Hope, Dolly, and Jesse, the zoos giraffe family.
Several indoor birthday activities will be going on inside the air-conditioned comfort of the Gary Clarke Education Center. Marion Lane Candles will be conducting a candle workshop. For a donation of $5.00, zoo guests can make their very own zoo animal candle with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Zoo. In addition, as a special tribute to Hope, visitors can decorate a quilt square for the "Blanket of Hope". The blanket will feature messages of hope that will be tied together and be on display throughout the day. Those visitors who wish to decorate their quilt squares prior to Sunday may pick up their quilt squares in the Leopard Spot Gift Shop.
"This is a special day for Hope and for the Topeka Zoo" states Brendan Wiley, Zoo Director. "We encourage everyone to join us in this celebration of Hope". The Topeka Zoo will open at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5.75 for Adults, $4.75 for Seniors and $4.25 for children ages 3 - 12. Children 2 and under are FREE as are FOTZ Members.
