Kansas Regulator Rejects Permit for Coal Plants
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas' top environmental regulator has rejected a permit for two coal-fired power plants in southwest Kansas.
The ruling is considered a victory for environmentalists concerned about global warming.
The decision today from Rod Bremby, secretary of health and environment, prevents Sunflower Electric Power from starting construction on its 3.6 billion dollar project.
Bremby said it was his responsibility to protect the state's public health and environment from actual or potential harm from air pollution.
He says it's irresponsible to ignore emerging information about the effects of carbon dioxide emissions on global warming.
The utility is expected to challenge the ruling.
