Topeka Fire Chief Howard Giles Wednesday met face-to-face with the Fire Union Leadership to address point-by-point issues raised by them at a September 21 meeting with City Manager Norton Bonaparte.
The concerns have been categorized as managerial, operational, and budgetary.
The meeting lasted three hours.
Bonaparte said a federal mediator was asked to observe the proceeding, help facilitate the meeting, and make suggestions. The mediator identified the main issues as lack of communication and trust. There are no plans to involve the mediator in future discussions.
Members of Fire Administration, which include Chief Giles and the two deputy chiefs, are scheduled to meet Thursday with the Union’s Executive Board.
The meeting is the next regularly scheduled meeting between the two, which meet at least once and sometimes twice a month.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Bonaparte said he is committed to continuing to meet with firefighters, including those on a list to be provided by the union.
