This Independence Day marks the start of retirement for one Shawnee County District Court judge.

After 21 years on the bench, Judge Thomas Conklin is hanging up the robe.

He began his legal career upon graduation from the Washburn University School of Law in 1968.

The Third Judicial District Nominating Commission has named three finalists for Judge Conklin's position: Topeka Municipal Court Associate Judge Cheryl Rios Kingfisher, Deputy District Attorney for Shawnee County Dave Debenham and Ruth Graham, who has a solo law practice.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius has until July 24th to choose one of them to replace Conklin.
